tactility &
the everyday
I assemble and stitch textiles, wool, pigment, paper, yarns and threads together into tapestries, creating abstract still lifes.
Marthe’s artistic work began with a desire to wrap, bind, and enfold objects in fabric, an act of tenderness meant to forge a deeper connection with the physical world. She explores the concept of material intelligence, the idea that simple everyday objects, like a bowl, a broom, an apron or a jar, contain a unique human wisdom accumulated over time through the hands of multiple generations. Throughout history, tapestries have been used for narrating grand stories and depicting heroic scenes. Marthe’s tapestries are an altar for the everyday, and a revaluation of simplicity, tactility and imperfection.
In addition to her studio work, Marthe lectures at Artemis Academy in Amsterdam, where she develops curricula in art history, visual culture, and trend forecasting researching the Zeitgeist of the future.
