About

Marthe is a textile artist whose work blends color, texture, fabric, and paper to create tactile, assembled tapestries. She utilizes a variety of found, recycled, and self-made textiles and materials to create collages that highlight the inherent qualities, history, and signs of use embedded in cloth.

Marthe’s artistic work began with a desire to wrap, bind, and enfold objects in fabric, an act of tenderness meant to forge a deeper connection with the physical world. She explores the concept of material intelligence, the idea that simple everyday objects, like a bowl, a broom or a jar, contain a unique human wisdom accumulated over time through the hands of multiple generations. Throughout history, tapestries have been used for narrating grand stories and depicting heroic scenes. Marthe’s tapestries are an altar for the everyday, and a revaluation of simplicity, tactility and imperfection.

In addition to her studio work, Marthe lectures at the Academy Artemis in Amsterdam, where she develops curricula in art history, visual culture, and trend forecasting researching the Zeitgeist of the future.
